Beaded Brass Uvong - Red Pattern
Beaded Brass Uvong - Red Pattern
The 'Lingling-O' holds immense cultural importance as it is crafted, worn, and safeguarded by Igorot Peoples. This symbol has been revered and preserved for many generations, symbolizing good fortune, prosperity, social standing, and fertility for indigenous communities throughout pre-colonial Philippines. Within Ifugao Igorot culture, the term "Uvong" denotes the 'closed-c shape' variant of the Lingling-O. The Uvong is historically created from gold, but today they are often made from brass, bronze, or sometimes silver. They are typically worn as necklaces or earrings.
The oldest versions of the Uvong/Lingling-O have been found, with origins dating back to approximately 500 BC.
